2013年版《中国新生儿病房分级建设与管理指南(建议案)》有如下要求：
(6)新生儿病房床位空间应当满足患儿医疗救治的需要，无陪护病室抢救单元每床净使用面积不少于6㎡，间距不小于l m；其他床位每床净使用面积不少于3 ㎡，间距不小于0．8 m。
有条件的医疗机构可以设立单问或家庭式NICU。有陪护病室每床净使用面积不低于12 ㎡。

《2007 Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings》中多次提到：
（p71）In multi-patient rooms, >3 feet spatial separation between beds is advised to reduce the opportunities for inadvertent sharing of items between the infected/colonized patient and other patients.
（p84）Ensure that patients are physically separated (i.e.,>3 feet apart) from each other. Draw the privacy curtain between beds to minimize opportunities for direct contact.) Category II
